Common Groundhopper in my wildflower meadow

Living in a terraced house, one of many 1000s, with a backyard, outside loo, no grass, parks, trees, etc., on the fringes of Liverpool city centre in my childhood and early adulthood, I never saw a grasshopper until I lived in a neighbouring county many years later. So to see a small grey/black tiny ‘grasshopper’ in my garden stumped me! After a few enquiries, I found out from Africa Gomez, who has a great invertebrate behaviour website, that it could possibly be a groundhopper something I had never heard of before and I suspect she was correct.

Another new species in my wildflower meadow!

So glad I got rid of my boring lawn for this wildflower meadow. More work than I thought it would be but ever so worth it. Other than going to nature reserves, I now see many more butterflies, moths, bees and flying insects. It’s so interesting and exciting to see what will reveal itself in the future!

As ever, some great photos of the Common groundhopper by Steven Falk here
