Speke Hall-making compost bins

All my articles, videos and work are funded by my teaching and sales of award winning bumblebee nest boxes, solitary bee boxes,  and wormeries.

Speke Hall in 2011 started work on a walled Victorian kitchen garden. Being a compost fanatic, I decided to make some compost bins from whatever materials were found lying around on site! With the help of colleagues and volunteers you can see how we got on……

Large wooden platforms were found, hand sawn then screwed and nailed together to form the frame….

I had to find a suitable site within the walled garden, preferably one that was sheltered……

 

The site I wanted had to be in a non productive or growing area within the walled garden, sheltered from the wide, rain and sun. This site  also offered shelter from the sun for those working to make the compost. This was ideal. The compost materials did not have to travel far to be composted, recycled and reused within the walls…

Wooden pallets, although not ideal were put to good use in making some side walls and platforms…..

The basic wooden frame was moved to the site for assembly……

All made from scrap pieces of wood, recycling wood to recycle waste vegetables and weeds, which make compost to grow fruit and vegetables, to make compost………sustainability in action! More scrap wood was found……may as well make use of them!!!!

And the Speke Hall compost bin 4 will, when finished, complete the set!

Bins 1 and 2 will do most of the hard work with 3-4 being in the main, resting bins…..now all that is needed is for the material to be  collected and prepare it for the composting process….see next post…
