90% of Britain’s bees are Solitary Bees. They are crucial pollinators yet are little known or conserved. This film aims to change that.
George Pilkington of Nurturing Nature has actually designed an ward winning special observation solitary Bee home that will allow us to get right up close to the bees while they make their nests and provide for their young. This bee home will enable us to film the bees like we have never done before and is used in this short promotional video.
A free educational resource for schools, conservation projects, wildlife trusts – free for anyone who loves our bees and our countryside! So please make a pledge for Team Candiru and let’s get this film made!! Thanks. George Pilkington
What can we do for the bees?
Team Candiru is creating a film showcasing the fascinating behaviour and value of solitary bees. We will follow a variety of bees through their struggles to find resources, avoid death and create new life. The finished film is to be provided as a free educational resource for schools, conservation projects, wildlife trusts – free for anyone who loves our bees and our countryside!
Why bees?
If you go out in your garden today, you’re sure of a big surprise! Gardens, allotments, overgrown derelict sites, everywhere can be a haven for a stunning array of wildlife, if you take the time to look. As well as being crucial, solitary bees are incredible, harmless insects which are very easy to attract and keep in your garden. They pollinate hundreds of crops and wild plants, including wildflowers, shrubs and trees, making them a key species within our UK ecosytem – without them our world would be very different! Their solitary nature means they have evolved unique and unusual behaviours to survive without the support of a hive. This film will reveal their lives like never before.
So what can you do to help?
We make scientific, natural history films that are beautiful and entertaining and we want to give them away free to aid education and conservation. But films cost. This is where you come in. We need to pay for things like fuel to get to our wonderful countryside, parks and gardens, and hire better equipment to tell the bee’s story as effectively and beautifully as possible. There is also the unique opportunity to get some fantastic perks so keep scrolling! Please help us and help the solitary bee.
The details.
This film is being made in and around the Avon Gorge and Clifton Downs in Bristol, in South Wales and we will soon be heading up to Warrington! The filming is well underway and expected to be completed by May 2015. We have the support of the National Trust, Natural England, Buglife, Environmental Justice Foundation, Nuturing-Nature, Campaign for the Solitary Bees, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Natural History Network, Wildlife Film-News, Bristol Zoo Gardens and Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project and would like to thank them for their advice and help with access and sponsorship.
You can donate at the top of this page (make sure you check out the perks first!) and keep up to date with our progress with our upcoming YouTube videos. Please feel free to ask us anything below or address enquiries to teamcandiru@gmail.com.
With your help we can film the bees and make a beautiful film, you can get some nifty perks (and our eternal gratitude), and together we can save Britain’s Solitary Bees! Thank you.
Risks and challengesLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
Although we already have a lot of good footage, bees are unpredictable, weather is unpredictable, therefore the exact nature of what we can film is unpredictable. We’re tackling this by filming in many locations and by extending our project to May 2015 so we get another shot at filming early season behaviours such as emergence and mating!
