A female Red Mason bee’s story

This is a charming short video by Gary Smith, forming part of his MA at the University of West England (UWE). It gives a glimpse into the secret world of our gardens and particularly a female Red mason bee.  I’m sure you will enjoy it and hopefully open your eyes to the Little World in your garden!

The Little World of the Red Mason Bee

by Gary Smith

Since spring this year I have been working on my film The Little World, as part of an MA. The film takes the viewer on an adventure too see the wildlife that we rarely notice.

The Little World of a Red Mason bee

On a garden wall, in the middle of a city, entire lives play out in the tiniest of places. The film follows a female red mason bee through spring and summer, introducing a number of other species that share her habitat.

The orchard bee box  by Nurturing Nature was an integral part of the film, allowing me to capture a variety of mason bee behaviours including wall building, depositing pollen and also the development of offspring. The film can be viewed here: https://vimeo.com/139146358

The Solitary Bees film

It is so nice to see younger people making films about Red mason and solitary bees. Here is another quality video called The Solitary Bees by Team Candiru.
