Nurturing Nature working with children from Liverpool

As one of its objectives, NADFAS aims to inspire young people with an enthusiasm for the Arts, an awareness of our Arts heritage and its conservation. LDFAS has raised money over and above the subscription income to make grants towards a variety of projects.

The Liverpool Society chose this year to ask George Pilkington, a Willow Weaving and Nurturing Nature expert, to carry out a project in a local County Primary School.

George spent seven full day sessions in Stockton Wood C.P. School in Speke, Liverpool, working mainly with children in the reception class.

The children were introduced to different woods, plants, wildlife and bugs, the latter being found around the school grounds. With great excitement they searched for the insects which were studied in great detail. Plasticine models and paintings were produced before the insects were returned to the wild.

Many skills were introduced to the pupils by using drills, saws, screw drivers, as well as measuring and willow weaving. The highlight was the weaving of willow crowns which linked in with the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations. The children also made planters for the school grounds which, hopefully, will be used for years to come. These were planted with bulbs and seeds.

This was altogether a very interesting and satisfying project, both for the children and our society.
